“We Can’t Breathe” (A Meditation on Eric Garner, et al)

Lord, we can’t breathe.
Our trust of one another,
our respect for authority,
our mutual care
cannot exist
under the pressing weight
of  hate
violence
mistrust

Release us, Lord
free us
hem us in, yes,
but let us breathe

til, breathing,
and inspired by you,
we recognize your face–
in the Other,
and in ourselves.
